Things to Do in the Park


Hike to Rainbow Falls over two bridges to the see the 80 foot waterfall with rainbow mists. Look for the elusive Pink Lady’s Slippers growing alongside the trail in addition to mountain pepper-bushes and rosebay rhododendron. Andrews Bald is a popular hike with a major drop in elevation and the prospect of blackberries and raspberries, depending on the season. Walk through an old hardwood forest over log bridges to Alum Cave Bluffs. The interior of the caves are wonderfully sheltered from the damp climate.


Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a humid subtropical climate that is unheard of anywhere else in the United States, exempting parts of Hawaii and Alaska. Check out the observation tower at Clingmans Dome, optimally located at the highest point in the park. This observation point is perfect to take in the scenery, beloved by over 11 million recreational visitors a year.


See Wildlife at Cades Cove


Explore the most popular valley in the Great Smokies! Families travel here for the best chance of seeing wildlife. White-tail deer frequent the area, exploring fields during the summer and keeping to the forests in the winter. Whether on foot or on bike, come out to try to spot black bears, ground hogs, raccoons, and other local wildlife. There is a Visitor Center halfway around the loop road with restrooms and a bookstore. Cades Cove has restored eighteenth and nineteenth century structures along the loop road, including a working grist mill, log houses, and three churches.
